Clever rogues win in Leverkusen

Schalke showed from the first minute on that they wanted to take three points from Leverkusen. The defence didn’t allow much, in midfield Domenico Tedesco’s players went into the duels early on and in front Breel Embolo and Guido Burgstaller caused disorder among the Leverkusen players from the start. After some good offensive moves Guido Burgstaller took the lead after only 11 minutes. Kevin Volland had lost the ball in the forward movement, Daniel Caligiuri twice in midfield and then played an optimally timed pass towards Burgstaller. Panagiotis Retsos, who was only 19 years old, miscalculated and let the mischievous striker dance himself out with only a body illusion. Bernd Leno was caught on the wrong foot when the Swiss dryly sank the ball to 1-0. After the lead the Schalker withdrew and defended even more attentively and consistently.

Kohr cashed yellow-red

The Werkself had a hard time to score goals and despaired of the perfectly organized Schalker defense. Leon Bailly came after a corner to shoot down, but from a promising position, however, pulled away, so that the ball just missed the goal. But Heiko Herrlich’s team did not have much more to offer, a shot on goal by Ralf Fährmann they did not manage until the break. Even before half-time Dominik Kohr had to leave the field with yellow-red. In the 32nd minute, the ex-Augsburg player was late against Leon Goretzka and consequently saw yellow, only six minutes later he caught Breel Embolo below the knee and got his second eligible card. Leverkusen was lucky that the Schalker only went into the break with a 1-0 lead, after the chance of Leon Goretzka, who forced Bernd Leno into a brilliant save in the 29th minute, S04 was close to the deserved second goal.

excitement just before the end

At the beginning of the second half Schalke continued to dominate the game. Embolo and Naldo had chances to decide the game early on, as Bayer now played much more offensively and the Schalke players used rooms to counter. In the middle of the second half, the Leverkusen team became more offensive, but were unable to build up any real pressure. Lucas Alario, whom Herrlich replaced after one hour, revived the offensive game and came to some good conclusions, but without really testing Ralf Fährmann. Even Kießling and Bellarabi, who came into play in the final phase, were not able to put the strong Schalker defense in trouble. In the 83rd minute, the strong Embolo missed the preliminary decision, Leno held on brilliantly in 1:1. In the closing minutes, it was Retsos again who caught an unfortunate moment and after a stick error in front of his own goal, Embolo fouled to prevent a 2-0 win. After some protests referee Siebert looked at the scene again, but stuck to his correct decision. Bentaleb scored the well-deserved 2-0 win, which saw the Schalker pass the Leverkusen team (38 points) with 40 points.
